Katarina Witt began to ice skate at the age 5 years. When her talent for skating became more apparent, she received an entry to an Karl-Marx-Stadt school, which focuses on youngsters with sporting ability. Here she first had a conversation with the trainer Jutta M ller. The year that Witt made her breakthrough was in 1982, when she placed 2nd at the World Championships in Copenhagen. Since that time her elegance and grace caught everyone's attention. Then she began dominating the sport. Olympic success Katarina (now Witt) was awarded the Figure Skating Gold Medal during the Sarajevo Winter Games. Four years later she was able to win an even tighter contest. While she was unable to win the free-skating contest, medal was given to her for her performance on the compulsory figures and the program in short form. Witt was the first female to take home a gold medal in both women's and men's figure-skating since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating following her successes as a film actress. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. While she did not win a single medal, she was awed by fans even with her seventh place finish. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in 1995.
